b'"TheStoryoftheCreationofCurtis\'sWorkTent"IhaveoftenbeenaskedwhereIgettheideasformyroomboxes.InmostcasesIgettheminthemiddleofthenight.Mysenseisthattheyaretriggeredbyasubconsciousmemorywhichtakesmebackintotimetosomevisualexperience.However,thisboxisdifferentinthatIcanclearlyseethethreadofmylifesexperienceinit.AsachildIspentuntoldhourswithmyfatherinhisdarkroomdevelopingblack&whitephotographs.Dadwasaveryaccomplishedamateurphotographer.Heprimarilytookphotographsofhispeersandourfamily.Hisphotographswerenotsnapshots,rathertheyattemptedtotellthestoryofhistimesandexperiencesthroughpowerfulinformalportraits.IenjoyedthosetimessharedinhisdarkroomparticularlywhenIwasallowedtoworkthedevelopertray.Iwouldtiltthetraybackandforthuntiltheimageappearedalmostlikemagiconthepaperinthetray.Itwasalmostasifthenarrativeofthephotographwascomingaliveformeasthewetimageappeared.DuringhighschoolandcollegemyinterestinphotographylessenedasIwasintroducedtomid-18thcenturyAmericanartists.IcouldnotgetenoughofthegenreartworksofWilliamSydneyMount,FitzHenryLane,WinslowHomerandsomanyothers.IdontknowwhichIlikedbetter-thebeautifulimagesorthenarrativesthoseartists\'imagescreatedinmymind.AftercollegeIwaslivingandworkinginWashington,DC.andbecameacquaintedwithJimBlakelywhoownedTheOldPrintGallery,awonderfulantiqueprintshoplocatedinWashingtonD.CIfrequentlyvisitedtheshopandpurchasedseveralantiqueprintsfromhimtodecoratemyapartment.OnedayheintroducedmetotheworksofEdwardCurtis.Iwastotallycaptivatedbytheexperience.ThatdayIboughtmyfirstCurtisphotogravurefor$175.Thatwasover40yearsago,andIamstillcaptivatedbythesameimageasitnowprominentlyhangsonmybreakfastroomwall.OvertheyearsIcontinuedmyinterestin18thcenturyartistsandthephotographsofCurtis.IreadanumberofbooksabouthimandthroughthemIbecameevenmoreinterestedinhiswork,hispublicationTheNorthAmericanIndianandhispersonalstory.'
