b'Asmychildrengrewup,Iwantedtoexposethemtothewondersofthewest,andformanyyearswetraveledtoaranchlocatedinSaddlestring,WY.Theranchexperienceandmymindsimagesofitcontinuetogreatlyinfluenceme.ThepaintingTheSpeedwayasViewedFromCastleRockwascreatedbyJoelOstlindasacommissionforagoodfriendofminewhowaskindenoughtoallowmetouseitasthebackgroundforthebox.Inthefallof2015,IhadjustfinishedaroomboxdepictingmyvisionsviewofwhatCurtissstudioandretailstoremayhavelookedlikeinSeattlearound1900.IthappenedtocoincidewithanexhibitiontheTaftMuseuminCincinnatiwashavingfeaturingChristopherCardozascollectionofCurtisPhotographs.Cardozacametotowntogivealectureabouttheexhibit.DuringhisvisitIhadanopportunitytomeethimandinvitehimtomystudiotoviewmyroombox.Hegraciouslyacceptedandwasextremelycomplimentaryabouttheboxandmywork.OnthewaybacktohishotelheaskedmeifIwouldconsidercreatinganotherboxforexhibitswhichhehopedtoarrangeinafewyearstocelebratethe150thbirthdayofEdwardCurtis.ItoldhimthatIdidnotdocommissions.HesmiledandthenaskedifIwouldbeopentotakingasuggestionasasubjectforabox.Clearly,Itookthebait.Inthinkingaboutanappropriatesubjectforthebox,IdecidedthatIwouldcreateatentinsidetheroomboxillustratingtheprocessCurtisusedtomakecyanotypes.HecreatedtheseimagesinthefieldfromhisglassplatenegativestoenablehimtoviewproofsofhisworkandalsoprovidetokensofgratitudefortheNativeAmericanswhoposedforhim.Makingacyanotypeisverymuchofahands-onprocess,muchliketheoneIsharedwithmyDadyearsago.Curtissstorycontinuestobeanon-goingthreadinmylife,thustheboxCurtissTentwasborn.'
